nature day forest school – crickets + grasshoppers

To kick off our Summer Semester of class, we chatted about crickets + grasshoppers.

We had a very short lesson today just to cover the basic info (which was perfect) before heading out to the forest.

Our first stop was snack, which I pre-made theses crickets to eat. This was my inspiration and in true Pinterest vs Real Life fashion…

But they still tasted great and everyone really liked them.

After our snack we did our first activity – hide and seek. Turns out, crickets have incredible hearing and will chirp unless they hear a noise. In this version of “hide and seek” the kids were instructed to hide and chirp until an adult got close to finding them, stopping when the adult was nearby. We played a few rounds of this and many kids said it was their favorite part of class.

Next up was our grasshopper craft with clothespins I painted before class, green pipe and google-eyes.

And of course I had a nice stack of books to fit our theme –

Before our gathering concluded I had the kid sit down and I asked them something that they learned. Then I asked what their favorite part of class was (the hide and seek game was a popular answer).

It was a great session!

Life is in stages. There is a stage where, like grasshoppers, we hop from grass to grass. And another, where we move from grass to grace.
