nature day forest school – leaves

Our theme for this Fall unit is Trees so we kicked it off with learning about trees that live year round and tree barksap & syrup and acorns. Today we tackled leaves.

For our lesson we talked about how the leaves give nutrients to the tree and the soil, how leaves & humans are similar and how you can tell what tree the leaves came from just by looking at them.

Then we moved onto a quick snack, leaf shaped cookies. Here’s the cookie recipe I used.

Our activities were two crafts that involved leaves – one was called “leaf printing” where you paint a leaf and press it onto paper like a stamp. It turned out beautifully and we talked about who we could mail our paintings to.

And our second activity / craft was to make “leaf people.” We glued leaves onto paper and then drew a face, arms, legs, etc. so the leaf was their outfit. The kids loved this and made a couple pages each. The parents thought it was very creative and I think everyone went home with some fun activities to do.
