Feeding the 5,000. It’s a famous Bible story (you can find it in Luke 9:12-17 and John 6:1-14).
The idea is there were over 5,000 people listening to Jesus teach, and it becomes very obvious that everyone needed to eat. Jesus told the disciples to provide something, but they couldn’t figure out how. Until a boy approached Andrew (one of Jesus’ buddies) with his lunch his mom packed him – 2 fish & 5 loaves of bread. It wasn’t much, but Jesus used it to feed 5,000+ people AND have leftovers.
It’s a popular miracle, and rightly so.
Growing up in church, I know this story well. Every now and then, I’ll hear it in a different way with new perspectives and the story grows in richness for me.
Well, then I heard it like this… and it spoke volumes. Practical. Fitting for my current season.
I bring my basket. He (Jesus) starts with that. We bring our basket – whatever talents, skills, abilities we have – and we seek Him with everything we are. He works the miracle.
Remember your true task. Surrender everything. Bring your loaves and your fish, even if you think them completely insufficient. They are insufficient. You are insufficient. But His grace is not. He can still work a miracle from what you bring. If you’ll offer it in the first place.
