Our theme for this Fall unit is Trees so we kicked it off with learning about trees that live year round and this week we focused on tree bark. We chatted about tree bark briefly and then I read a story that dived deeper into the variety of ways tree bark benefits trees, insects, animals and humans.
Snack was homemade yogurt bark. This blog post was my inspiration but we improvised too and ended up with three different flavors. The kids (and parents) loved it!
To allow for exploring time, I only had one activity prepared which was bark-rubbing. You put some paper around a tree and let the kids color on it, noticing the texture and the results of the strokes of crayons (when turned sideways). Everyone thought it was pretty nifty and I heard a couple parents say they were going to try it at home too.
