Happy National Sugar Cookie Day!
Any excuse to make this treat is fine by me, and it was so much fun to do with my 2 1/2 year old. She absolutely loved helping me pour in the 6 easy ingredients and cutting out the cookies. And decorating them with our homemade frosting was a bonus and a great activity for a couple hours.
I wanted to share the recipe on the blog today to celebrate this national day and give you a fun activity idea to do with your family on this lovely summer day 😉
Sugar Cookie Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup room temperature butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 egg
- 3 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350°.
-
Mix together the butter and sugar in the bowl for 2 – 3 minutes.
-
Add in vanilla and egg. Mix until combined.
-
Add flour and baking powder to the bowl. The texture should be like Play-doh. You can add a little flour or water if needed to get it to a soft, pliable consistency.
-
Lay the dough out onto a floured surface. Use a rolling pin or your hands and roll until they reach the thickness you want (1/4 inch is normal).
-
Use cookie cutters and cut out desired shapes. 😀
-
Transfer the cookies to a cookie sheet.
-
Bake at 350° for 6-8 minutes or until the centers are puffy and no longer glossy. Pull the cookies out of the oven BEFORE they start turning brown. If they turn brown, the cookie will be dry instead of soft and chewy.
-
If desired, frost with Sugar Cookie Frosting and ENJOY!
