A few years ago, I was encouraged to really reflect on the previous year and ask some really deep, thought-provoking questions. Aaron & I would get a sitter, take a whole day and cover all these questions – I wrote up a blog post with the list if you want to check it out.
Although I have aspirations to one day use this exercise as an excuse to take a weekend getaway, for now it’s just not in the cards.
In the meantime, I was prompted to keep it simple and really dive deep into these ideas. I wanted to share them with you today because I believe they are so so so good and worth taking the time to reflect, asses and pivot.
To begin, take some time and scroll through your photos & videos (on your phone) from the year. Do this while asking God to show & speak to you things that should stand out. Things that brought you joy that should be prioritized more. Fake smiles in the midst of frustrating moments. Are all your pictures taken at work or without your loved ones? Trust me, give it enough intentionality, and God will say something.Â
Next, go through these categories and give yourself an overall grade (A-F) and write one sentence how you can improve. Some like to go through this list at the end of every month… goals!
- Faith – how is my relationship with God?
- Marriage – is my spouse a priority? do they feel it?
- Family – kids, extended family, etc.
- Work – am I too obsessed? not working enough?
- Digital – time spent on social media, in front of screens, etc.
- Ministry – my purpose in lifeÂ
- Financial – earning, giving, saving, spending habits
- Social – time with others
- Attitude- my approach to life
- Creative – dreams and plans for the futureÂ
- Mental / Emotional- my mind and thoughtsÂ
- PhysicalÂ
To wrap it up, ask yourself these FIVE QUESTIONS:
1. What is my life’s purpose?
Proverbs 29:18 says, “here there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”
You don’t know what to say yes and no to because you don’t know your life’s purpose.
2. What am I doing to accomplish my purpose?
Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Is what I’m doing in my daily life working? Is my schedule right?
3. How am I doing?
Proverbs 27:23 says, “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds;”
Don’t be afraid to ask others how you are doing in certain areas. Ask your spouse, a trusted friend.
4. What are my values?Â
5. What is most important right now?
“What one thing, if it got better, would make the biggest difference?”
I hope you might take some time to really press into these questions and allow the Lord to show you where you can grow this year.
